Vocal Tips: Brett Manning Discusses Vocal Terminology

Brett tackles one of the oldest issues in vocal pedagogy: Terminology. No matter what anyone calls the sounds coming out of their throat, the singer still is left with the daunting task of actually singing even as all the world’s vocal coaches fight over what to call falsetto and other “important issues”

Head Voice, Legit, Superhead, Whistle Flageolet, Unsupported, Nuetral, Curbing, Belting, Yelling, Chest Voice, Low Voice, High Voice, Strong Voice, Breathy Voice, Rasp, Grott, Texture, Screaming, Bel Canto, Covering, Narrowing, Overdrive (my personal favorite :: rolls eyes ::), mixing, extended chest, support chest, unsupport chest, falsetto, false voice, real voice, fake voice, bad voice, good voice…

No matter what you call it.. most people agree that good sound is… well good.

I joined singing success today under the “FREE” basic… catagory for the moment. I don’t understand why every film clip offered comes up “We are sorry but….not available.” There is sound but obscured video. Seeing Brett (a very gifted teacher indeed)or whomever else is teaching clearly, is important to me as I believe you would agree. Am I doing something wrong?

Though I understand that the “FREE” offer is there to entice you to buy the lessons (good business move), is it for real or just there to frustrate you enough to take the plunge? Honesty is also a good business move.

I do appreciate the little I am able to glean through the haze and recognize that there is much for me to learn in the teaching approach. My feeling has always been that school is never out for the true artist. My modest experience as a performer and vocal teacher has taught me that the point at which you believe you know everything there is to know about your art, you’ve begun to walk the path to irrelvance.

Brett-THANK YOU so much for this video! I have struggled for years, been to a multitude of vocal teachers and learned many techniques, including Bel Canto, CVT, Vocal process etc…Terminology can be so confusing that you just end up frustrated at every turn. Thank you for just bringing back to what it is…making a sound!

Brett you are Funny! Thanks because sometimes us singers can get so caught up in ‘perfection’ that we become almost afraid to sing because it won’t be perfect! Thanks for the reminder…
We shouldn’t forget to ‘just SING!’..

Brett, I was sitting here in front of my computer…AGAIN, watching and listening to my favorite artists, mainly Blues Guitar singers, but I just LOVE MUSIC! I was feeling sorry for myself AGAIN that at 48 years old my chance has long past by and it is “too late” for me to begin to try to learn how to sing! I stumbled upon your site as I finally thought, somebody out there must know how to teach people to “get the most out of thier voice?” I want to play music and sing, but I don’t want to scare people and drive dogs away howling! Can you really help me? Even at 48 years old? Oh ya, I’ve had 3 neck surguries where I have had discs removed, and the Doctors said it may change my voice? It didn’t, but there may be scar tissue or something? Or should I just be content to sit at my computer and listen to music? I “can handle the truth” Tell it like it is Brother, What should I do?

Hi :
I have a really bad voice for singhing and even for speaking.
I drop the sound at the end of a sentence. I need to take training in singing so I can yell with credibility as I am going to work as a security officer soon and I don’t want to lose points because my voice image is less than desirable.

I need to deliver ” voice authority ” when needed at work.

I am interested in knowing the technique for singing which will give help me. I am talking about the american idol JENNIFER HUDSON’ voice.

Please give me the name of such technique or the technique that approaches her singing voice.

Thanks for you help.

Juan

Hey,

I’m a teacher who teaches based on a scientifically proven methodology and, surprising though it may be, I agree totally with Brett. Sure, I can explain in scientific terms what Brett is teaching - but who cares, as long as it works - the teacher needs to know what they’re doing, sure, but the student needs to sing by feel. In my studio I spend less and less time talking about the science and more and more about the sound and how it feels. The science helps me know what I’m teaching is right, but it’s not much use to the student.

Great teaching and great outlook Brett.

For those who ask whether Brett is the real deal, the answer from a sceptic is a most enthusiastic yes.

I struggle to support my family. And I don’t like the idea of giving a rich guy my hard earned money.

I’m a baritone (I make my living playing keys and singing for seniors) who could not hit above F#, and to hit F and F# consistently would really damage my voice.

I actually got access to Singing Success for free. I started seeing results after week 3. Now I’ve been doing it consistently for 3 months, and I am able to sustain G pretty consistently and I’m often hitting higher without strain. In my exercises, I’m able to hit Bb in a mixed voice and hit really high notes in head voice. Every day, my larynx is moving around less when I vocalize, but it still has a ways to go to stop associating high notes with a high larynx.

I’m in a transition stage, and I’m confident that in a month or two, I’ll be able to belt out a male high C with a lot of gusto. I do a lot of driving to my gigs, and I am vocalizing to Brett and Jesse all the time in the car.

Oh, I forgot to mention that since I am getting so much out of Brett’s 12 CD program (which as I said, I got for free), I sprung for Singing Success Online.

About 12 years ago, I took lessons from two teachers who have published books on vocals, one of whom has a Grammy Award winning student. After five weeks, he couldn’t get me into head voice. He told me that I had to do my exercises standing up, and I had back problems, and I got frustrated and quit.

Now with Brett Manning, without even taking a formal lesson, the guy got me into head voice in two weeks of practice (many take less time doing this).

Anyway, this is great stuff.

Larry

okay im not gonna lie. my voice sounds gay and i really love music but i CANT SING! i really really wanna be able to sing.
i was feeling discouraged when i REALLY thought i was singing good when my dad walked in my room and told me to quit with the ‘noise’ i felt crushed. i seriously end up wishing and praying to sing really good, and i guess this is my chance that god gave me.. all i remember doing was watching American idol audition videos when i saw Hayley Williams video on you tube talking about singingsuccsess. i want to buy it, but that’s too much money to just open the program and learn nothing. so far all i heard was positive and good things, no matter how hard i looked i couldn’t find any bad reviews. right now i am only 13 and i think its the perfect time to learn… because i have A LOT of time to make progress.. i know my voice is still developing and crap but, my life long dream is too sing, and i have no talent whats so ever. and i am more independent and a little shy, but the only reason is because i hate my voice.. and if i feel positive about my voice ill have more friends.. and ill be more comfortable making videos and talking to new people. a lot of people tell me i sound gay.
and a lot of people tell me to stop singing and insist that i don’t sound good.. to me i sound amazing, but to other people and on video or recordings i notice. i really don’t sound like that.. it was crushing at first, but now im just getting used to it. at one time i was beginning to think i will never be able to sing, like when my dad walked in on me tonight. the music im into is rock/emo/soft rock/. i like all the others like rap, country and R&B but i listen to rock emo and soft rock/punk more than all the other. (paramore, green day, escape the fate,) please help me sing like them i really need help.
i am a male..

Hi,
I totally agree, I´ve been watching many singing success videos and here is my question as a singer, at wich point you stop thinking and you start singing free, there are many theorys, many lessons, at what level you just sing without thinking, how much time does it take for your muscles to neuromemorize all of this and to do it without processing so much knowledge. I think that could somehow get in the way and make your art just sound like a big singing lesson, what´s the balance?
