Much like Tuvan throat-singing, whistle voice, or flageolet register as it is sometimes known, has been a mystery in singing technique circles for hundreds of years. Even more mystifying is that many of the world’s most famous modern-day “whistlers” are men. From Adam Lopez to Brett Manning, these singers with as many as six octaves of tone are puzzling the world’s vocal pedagogues.

Previously thought to only exist in young adult females, whistle voice is one of the most interesting sounds a human voice can make. The stylistic importance of the highest vocal register has and always will be debated but with artists like Mariah Carey, Minnie Ripperton, Adam Lopez and Brett Manning it seems that art will push the boundaries of tradition as it always does.

Thankfully for any artist bold enough to use flageolet, vocal coach Brett Manning sheds some light on to how it works and explains why any singer has an opportunity to find this controversial vocal range.  This video, with plenty of demonstrations, shows the difference between head voice, falsetto, and whistle voice. The viewer must now decide if whistle voice is pleasing enough to hear in a song.
