Katy Perry’s Preaching Parents Were Druggies
You are probably aware that the Perrys disapprove Katy’s choice of song and image.
The singer of “I Kissed a Girl” has gotten a tongue lashing or two via the media from her mother, who has called the whole thing “disappointing.”
“Its message is shameful and disgusting”
“I can’t even listen to that song,” said Mary Perry. “The first time I heard it I was in total shock. It promotes homosexuality and its message is shameful and disgusting. When it comes on the radio I bow my head and pray.”
This sort of report has circled media with the same frenzy that the song circled radio playlists.
A new surprise, however, is that the parents who raised Katy in a strict Christian home actually have wild pasts of their own. Keith and Mary Perry, preachers in California, know what they’re talking about when they warn the young’uns.
Apparently, her mother ran away from home to see the world, and dated Jimi Hendrix once while she was in Spain. “He just came up to her in a club and picked her out,” said Katy. Mary ended up in an unfortunate marriage in Zimbabwe before her conversion.
A drug dealer in the 60s
Her father Keith was a hippy drug dealer in the 60s, Katy says. He was friends with Timothy Leary, unofficial spokesman for LSD, and was known for providing a special type called Strawberry Fields (named after the Beatles song).
“I started spending Sunday mornings crying and hung over,” Katy told Blender magazine, “because crying is what you do when you’re hung over. So my dad started telling me about when he was my age. My dad would have died from one tab of Strawberry Fields too many if he hadn’t found God.”
You’d think she would listen to all that sound experience. Another old adage rings true: Youth is wasted on the young.
